The hallucinated source problem

Here's the thing nobody puts in their ad. When you ask a chatbot to write a research paper, the bibliography looks impressive and a lot of it is made up. The model grabs a real author, a believable title, and a journal name, then stitches them into a citation that does not exist anywhere. Your professor types it into Google Scholar and gets nothing. That is the exact moment a normal assignment turns into a meeting about academic misconduct.

The scarier part is that it doesn't always happen right away. Plenty of students turn in AI work, get an A, and figure they got away with it. Then a different professor checks a source a semester later, or runs the paper through the new checker the department just licensed. The risk doesn't expire when the grade comes back.

What a real writer actually does

When a person writes your research paper, they start with the real literature. They read the sources. They build a thesis that fits the evidence instead of inventing evidence to fit a thesis. The argument has a specific angle, written by someone who actually knows what they are arguing, not the smooth, balanced mush that comes out of a prompt box.

And here's the part that actually keeps you safe. A real writer makes small choices you can explain. When your professor asks why you framed the problem that way, or why you leaned on that study, you have an answer. You can defend it. A generated paper leaves you staring at a paragraph you cannot explain, and that is usually how students get caught.

How the sources actually work

Every citation in your paper points to a real article, book, or paper. If a source sits behind a paywall, we flag it so you can pull it through your school library before you turn the paper in.
