Personal statement versus statement of purpose

This trips people up, so let's clear it up. They're not the same thing, and a lot of programs ask for one specifically.

A personal statement leans on who you are and why you fit. It's more about fit, motivation, the shape of your thinking. A statement of purpose leans on what you want to do and how this program gets you there. It's more concrete, more about research interests, career goals, the path forward. Pick the wrong one and you've answered a question they didn't ask. Your mentor tells you which your programs actually want, because they read those prompts for a living.

The AI problem, and why it's fatal here
